Hope For Today – Easter: The Tomb of Jesus is Empty!

It’s Easter and, if we were honest, had it not been for the resurrection of Jesus, we would most likely have never met like this.

I’m Dr. Matthew Lee Smith and I want to share some Hope For Today announcing The Tomb of Jesus is Empty!

In fact, without the resurrection of Jesus, I would most likely be a retired computer programmer, having never answered the call of Jesus to full-time ministry in that critical year when I was seeking WHICH college to go to back in the early 1970s. You see …

Jesus Christ changes lives:

Some people are transformed with hope.

Others are revulsed by their shame.

No one encounters Jesus and walks away indifferent forever!

Yet, some say His claims …

  • Are too bizarre – He can forgive sin and give us eternal life
  • Are too demanding – He calls us to follow Him as King of our lives and leader of our hearts and dreams
  • Are too supernatural – He is the All-Powerful, All-Knowing, All-Present One who is fully God and fully human

Yet, when the honest, open-minded person looks into the historical evidence within and outside the New Testament, they discover it …

  • It screams a risen Jesus!

Listen as I read the earliest Creed of the Church. Paul reminds the Corinthian Church …

I passed on to you what was most important and what had also been passed on to me.

  1. Christ died for our sins, just as the Scriptures said.
  2. He was buried,
  3. And he was raised from the dead on the third day, just as the Scriptures said.
  4. He was seen by Peter and then by the Twelve.
  5. After that, he was seen by more than 500 of his followers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have died.
  6. Then he was seen by James and later by all the apostles.
  7. Last of all, as though I had been born at the wrong time, I also saw him.” (1 Corinthians 15:3–8, NLT)

ANYONE could have tracked these people Paul talks about down and verified if these claims were true … I mean, it had been less than 20 years! Today, we celebrate again an event that has been …

  • Recorded in history
  • Reinforced by investigation
  • Revered by nations
  • And rebelled against by many

However, if you are honest and open-minded, you will look into the historical evidence within and outside the New Testament and discover:

  • It establishes Jesus’ claims of being God!

You see, as fully devoted followers of Jesus, we believe that it was the death of Jesus that paid the penalty of our numerous errors, failures, and rebellions – both in our past, in our present, and into our futures.

We trust that Jesus’ death was the substitution for our own penalty for all those failures and that by admitting to God our specific failures and asking Him to remove the stain of our insolence and the weight of our guilt, He will do so because of the death of Jesus outside of Jerusalem almost 2,000 years ago.

Order Now! Start An Outreach Movement This Summer!

Eagles don’t flock! You have to gather them. Eagles soar in a specific habitat conducive to their nature. If you want to gather eagles, you will have to create an environment where they want to be.

Gathering Missional Leaders explores the elements necessary to build the habitat that will attract a strong and vibrant coalition of men and women who want to reach their world in their generation!

With that in mind, this book is set up as a guided study. Whether you study alone, with someone, with your small group, leadership team or entire congregation, you will appreciate the discussion questions after each chapter. They are designed to stir your soul and allow you to hear the Spirit of God’s heart and desire for your life.

Gathering Missional Leaders will help you do two things as you build a missional team of eagle leaders around you. First, we will help you gather a Grand Alliance. These issues help you create the habitat where “eagles” long to reside.

Second, we will help you focus the Grand Alliance by target your community through decisive action using twelve key focal points. Again and again, you will return to these focal points as you take new ground and train new missional leaders for the Great Commission of Jesus.

What others are saying about Gathering Missional Leaders

“If learning to be a missional church is the key issue of our time, then it begs many strategic questions about the formation of missional leaders.  In these pithy reflections, Matthew Smith provides some really significant clues to the key issues we must face, as well as some practical suggestions as some ways forward.”

“Rich, straightforward and practical, Matthew Smith has given us a gift with this book. He writes with clarity from his own experience and shows how we can gather missional leaders to serve the cause of Christ in a powerful way. The contents of this book will lift hearts and communities to experience the love of Jesus.”

“I write a lot about leadership in the church. I’m probably passionate about this subject, because I sense such a great need for godly, missional leaders. We need men and women willing to walk by faith and challenge a generation to be more like Christ. Matthew Smith has the heart and tools to mentor young leaders and he’s doing so in his new book, Gathering Missional Leaders.  This is a needed book and will challenge you to live more boldly for Christ and the Kingdom.”

  • Brandon Cox, author of RewiredPastor, Church Planter, & Community Facilitator for Pastors.com

“In my work with Pastors around the world, there are very few I’ve met that have the ability to organize huge ideas and share them in a way that makes them easy to apply than Dr. Matthew Lee Smith. Matt has been a help and an encouragement to me, and I’m excited to see how Gathering Missional Leaders will be used to reach the world. Every Pastor needs this on his shelf!”

“Matthew Lee Smith writes a lot like he lives—with tons of passion and energy. And it’s contagious! Gathering Missional Leaders is a clarion call for those who long to break out of the church-as-usual-mode and accomplish great things for the kingdom. It’s also an excellent resource for groups to work through, as Smith has included insightful discussion questions throughout. This book will stretch your vision for ministry and inspire you to connect with other missional leaders.”

“Matthew Smith picks up where the “Purpose-Drive Life” left off. Smith has created a reproducible Missional Movement plan for the local church.”

“The passion of Matthew Smith will awaken the sleeping giant of the local church to the reality of its God-ordained mission.”

“Are you ready to get your “stuck” church moving forward as a Missional team? Matthew Smith leads us down a pathway dealing with the key issues involved and clarifying our focus toward building and gathering a Missional team that gets the mission accomplished.”

  • Tom Cocklereece, Author of Simple Discipleship, Senior Pastor of Shady Grove Baptist Church in Marietta, GA and CEO of RENOVA Coaching and Consulting/Simple Discipleship http://www.simplediscipleship.com/

“Dr. Matthew Smith has done it again. His book Growing Missional Leaders was good, but his new book Gathering Missional Leaders is even better. Perhaps because the same questions raised by Smith about missional churches are relevant to disciple-making churches.

“Each chapter begins with a missional premise to set the stage for discussion. All of the premises are right on target to developing and gathering a great leadership team for a missional church. However, one is particularly notable as it reminds us of the reality that Christians are in a spiritual war centered in enemy territory. Premise #12 is: Missional leaders understand they are soldiers for Jesus Christ and, as such, are invading a hostile territory to rescue men, women teens and children held hostage. It is imperative that today’s church awaken to meet tomorrow’s challenge of the Great Commission.

“My readers know I am passionate about motivating Christians and the churches to get busy doing the Great Commission—making disciple-making disciples. Recently I began challenging Simple Discipleship churches particularly to develop Special Ops Discipleship Teams that consist of certified disciple-coaches. Gathering Missional Leaders is an excellent guide for developing and maintaining your Special Ops Discipleship Team so you can launch a discipleship revolution in your church.

“Dr. Smith includes good questions for study and reflection at the end of each chapter. Form your vision team, read and study Gathering Missional Leaders together, and make disciple-making disciples! I heartily commend Dr. Smith’s book to leaders who are looking for a great training resource.”

  • Scott Couchenour, Life Coach at ServingStrong.com, VP Operations at Cogun.com

“This is serious stuff in this book. Dr. Matthew Smith has not only addressed the importance of living missionally, but has provided timeless and relevant guidance for those set on taking the challenge to reach a world for Christ, with Christ. From the start Dr. Smith addresses the leader’s heart in the chapter entitled, “It’s Not About You!” He says, “Missional leaders realize the Master has set the agenda.” From there, Dr. Smith proceeds to give clear and effective insight into all the salient aspects of being and leading missionally.

“Look, we don’t have a lot of time on this earth. Even if the Lord tarries for another 100 years, if you are reading this endorsement you have a limited lifespan within which to be used by God. If you’re serious about maximizing God’s impact through you, this book will be a well-worn item on your desk.

  • Walter White Jr. (Special Assistant, Inner City Impact, Chicago; Adjunct Professor, School of Religion, Liberty University Online)

Gathering Missional Leaders is a must read for anyone with a sense of call to reach their community with the life transforming power of the gospel. Birthed out personal experience, decades of hands-on ministry , and a clear understanding of the Biblical mandate, this significant resource will inspire you, challenge you and instruct you on what it means to purposely and authentically be “on mission” for Jesus Christ in the 21st century.”

  • Paul Banister, Pastor, Cornerstone Church in Sandwich, Illinois. www.cornerstoneofsandwich.com

“Matthew’s book is a mountain of missional motivation.  It is Biblically sound and practically written; a map of hope that helps bridge the call to mission with developing a team to carry out the Great Commission.  If you don’t want to try to soar alone in mission, read this book!”

  • Richard Jarman, Pastor, Touch Point Church, Bell Gardens, CA, http://www.touchpointbellgardens.org/

“Dr. Matthew Lee Smith is a blessing to the body of Christ! He has a deep passion to see lives changed by the gospel of Jesus Christ. He knows that the local church is the best place to bring followers of Jesus together, and train them to become leaders who will reach their communities (and the world) for Jesus.

Gathering Missional Leaders was born from his desire to see local churches become training centers where people can learn to “go and make disciples of all nations.” This book is not a dry, academic text designed to teach you facts about discipleship. Instead, it’s a field manual, a how-to guide. It can be (and should be) used by pastors and other church leaders who want to build a climate in their church where the next generation of mission-minded Christians can come together and thrive.

Gathering Missional Leaders is designed to be used as a personal or small group Bible study. Each chapter gives you a unique insight into creating and sustaining an environment conducive to mentoring people who want to follow God’s call to seek and save the lost.

“Rather than give you a synopsis of the book, let me tell the two things I appreciate most about Gathering Missional Leaders. The first is Dr. Smith’s faithfulness to Scripture. This man loves God and His word. He truly believes that everything we do as Christians should have its foundation in the Bible. Thus, what you get in this book are not his theories or ideas. What Dr. Smith delivers are timeless principles from God’s word.

“The second thing I love about this book is the way Dr. Smith applies those timeless principles to the way we live out our calling as Christians. God doesn’t expect us to merely study His word. We need to be doers of the word, and not hearers only. Dr. Smith lays out concrete steps that any church can take to build a culture where missional leaders can grow and thrive.

“I believe that Gathering Missional Leaders will be a great blessing and help to any church, large or small, that acts on the ideas it contains. That’s why I recommend it to you. Read it! Study it! Apply it! God will use it for your good, and His glory.”

My Daily Prayer

What’s your daily focus when you kneel in God’s presence?

Each day, when we stop and drop before the Lord of Life, we all focus our hearts. Where do your words take you before Him?

Here’s how I choose to surrender daily:

“Today, Lord, I will …

* Surrender to Jesus completely

* Serve His kingdom wholeheartedly

* Celebrate His generosity effervescently

* Seek His lost courageously.”

In this simple prayer, which I embellish, alter, rearrange, and seek to embody, I express the core of my heart to God. Let me explain …

First, I choose to surrender my will each day to His. Then, I focus my heart on His agenda and not mine. As I continue to turn my day to the Lord, it’s my deepest desire to express my appreciation for each of God’s provisions. As I rejoice in His goodness, it is my longing that each person enjoys the same favor from God. All around us are those who need Christ. Thus, I complete this simple pray by focusing my daily mission on His.

Each and every day, this simple prayer turns my heart and soul to God and His will; nothing more, nothing less, and nothing else.

How do you focus your heart and soul?

Come and See Where Jesus Healed the Demon-Possessed Man!

“When He had come to the other side, to the region of the Gadarenes, two demon-possessed men met Him as they came out of the tombs. They were so violent that no one could pass that way. Suddenly they shouted, “What do You have to do with us, Son of God? Have You come here to torment us before the time?”

Now a long way off from them, a large herd of pigs was feeding. “If You drive us out,” the demons begged Him, “send us into the herd of pigs.”

“Go!” He told them. So when they had come out, they entered the pigs. And suddenly the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea and perished in the water. Then the men who tended them fled. They went into the city and reported everything—especially what had happened to those who were demon-possessed. At that, the whole town went out to meet Jesus. When they saw Him, they begged Him to leave their region.” (Matthew 8:28–34, HCSB)

Walk through the town where Jesus did this exorcism! See the place where the miracle took place. Imagine the shock and awe of the villagers as they told Jesus to leave as a result of this. Listen as we read these words in their original setting.

Kursi is the Arabic name of the valley whose western side touches the lake shore, and where remains of a Jewish fishing village from the time of the Mishnah and the Talmud was found, and on whose eastern side, at the foot of the Golan Heights, a monastery was discovered. The monastery was found by accident during road construction after the Six-Day War.

According to the New Testament, Jesus disembarked here and met a man plagued by unclean spirits. Jesus cast out the unclean spirits into a herd of pigs grazing nearby, which stampeded into the lake and drowned (Mark 5:21). Versions of the story also appear in Matthew 8:28-33 and Luke 8: 26-39). The Gospels do not mention a specific site for the miracle, but early Christian tradition marked it here.

Hope For Today – Palm Sunday: Making Your Eternity Secure!

In today’s world, there are few things that are totally secure.

I’m Dr. Matthew Lee Smith and I want to share some Hope For Today with you about making your eternity secure!

Jesus, in the last hour of His freedom, declared the security seal of His new covenant with us. The Bible records His words in Mark 14:22-26 (NLT) … As they were eating [the Passover Meal], Jesus took a loaf of bread and asked God’s blessing on it. Then he broke it in pieces and gave it to the disciples, saying, “Take it, for this is my body.” And he took a cup of wine and gave thanks to God for it. He gave it to them, and they all drank from it. And he said to them, “This is my blood, poured out for many, sealing the covenant between God and his people. I solemnly declare that I will not drink wine again until that day when I drink it new in the Kingdom of God.” Mark 14:22-26 (NLT)

In the eating of this final meal, Jesus assures us that we can depend upon Him for our eternal life. As the final Lamb, Jesus secures our place in His presence for all eternity.

As the Lamb of God, Jesus offers us His body in our place. In these last minutes, as the clock ticked down to His betrayal and arrest, Jesus provides the ultimate assurance for His friends. Jesus was saying in effect, “This is the night of the sacrificial lamb. It dies in your place. However, tonight I will die in your place.” This sacrifice reminds us of John’s words when he first laid eyes upon Jesus: “Look! There is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!”

As the Lamb of God, Jesus offers us His blood for our sin. Just as the High Priest would take the blood of the sacrificial lamb and sprinkle it upon the mercy seat in the Temple that night, so Jesus would take His own blood as the Great High Priest and sprinkle it upon the Mercy Seat in heaven the next day. By doing so He offered a final sacrifice for sins for all who submit to His leadership and accept His forgiveness for their sins (Romans 10:9-10).

As the Lamb of God, Jesus offers us His promise for our future. In these final words to His followers, Jesus drops a great and powerful hint of hope. He says, “I solemnly declare that I will not drink wine again until that day when I drink it new in the Kingdom of God.” In the midst of this night of sorrow, there is the joy of the morning! Tonight He must pay the awesome price for our sin alone, but one day soon He will reap the joys of being reunited with His own. We will be with Him forever in Heaven!

If you have submitted to His leadership and accepted His forgiveness, His sacrifice made your eternity sure. Although painful and difficult, Jesus was returning to Heaven to prepare a place for us. When our place is ready, he will usher us into His joyful presence!

Divine Direction is a book you need to read NOW!

Divine Direction is a powerhouse of practicality. Craig Groeschel is tremendously transparent, illuminating the 7 choices that can bring about a different harvest in each person’s life.

Chapter by chapter of Divine Direction shows us how the Biblical principle, “what you plant into your life is what grows to abundance” (Galatians 6:7-8) manifests itself in our small, everyday choices. Pastor Groeschel affirms, “each choice you make is the decision of a lifetime.”

Divine Direction reminds us that every person is telling a story with their lives – and that those around us could tell us the details of what our story reveals to this point! Craig encourages us to decide what story we would like to tell with our lives and make the choices necessary for that to come to reality.

As the light of life and the words of wisdom mix into the reader’s heart and soul, hope and help begin to birth and bloom afresh. Whether you are badly marred by your own (or another’s) choices or simply off course presently, Divine Direction is for you.

Grab a copy of Divine Direction, digest its contents and then start a life group study with a few friends. You could make a big impact in their lives, perhaps even an eternal impact as you share Divine Direction with others!

3 Steps I Use to Communicate God’s Word to Others

Often I’m asked questions about what I do to bring clarity to the Biblical teachings. For me, I follow a three-step process. Perhaps they will be helpful to you.

  • Phase One: Search and seek. This is the discipline of entering into God’s Word daily to discover afresh God’s wisdom, will, and whim.  In this phase, I first open God’s Word daily, read, observe, and question what I am learning as to its “first world” impact and implications. (“First world” here means the world it originally was brought to first, the context of the text if you will.) Understanding these thoughts of God from the context of their setting, the impact upon their original recipients, and the consequences of their being obeyed or disregarded will first cause me to comprehend the depth of their meaning in a much fuller manner. This is why I am reading cover-to-cover for the 39th time this year.
  • Phase Two: Ponder and align. This is the process of internalizing those realities into my personal life and walk. In this phase I step back from my observations and begin to think through the implications of those thoughts to my daily life and choices. How do these things align or contradict with what I am doing and being? While this process is ongoing, it is also regular and persistent. As I continue to contemplate the implications of God’s directions and guidance, and I take in fresh observations on a daily basis, through the indwelling work of the Holy Spirit there is an ongoing dialogue occurring to draw me deeper and deeper into the abundant life. This step is essential to integrating a Christian worldview into my teaching. It is hard to express what I do not possess.
  • Phase Three: Express and mentor. This becomes the daily reality of exuding the abundance of my heart – God and His Word – as I speak, teach, train and mentor. Having a more Christian worldview daily allows me to relate the training before me to the real world scenarios around me and the reality and practicality of the Word of God to those scenarios. Bringing the heart and hope of Jesus to the men and women I interact with so they can bring the transformative power of God into the lives of others in their communities and their world is now more possible because I am more focused on both the material and the message of the Master of life.

This is what I attempt to do in order to teach Biblically. It is the process I have used for almost two decades now. I hope it is of help to you. What do you think?

Hope For Today – God’s Way Is God’s Word!

Giant problems require a team of warriors around us, especially as we grow older! David’s enemies were many – and, several of them were real, bona fide, terrifying giants! Knowing how to conquer them because a vital issue as David stepped into the last half of his life!

I’m Dr. Matthew Lee Smith and I want to share some Hope For Today to remind us that God’s Way Is God’s Word!

Rejoicing after his adversaries were pushing up daisies, and his son was about to move his kingdom into overdrive, the King of Israel writes a song for lasting impact. One of the lyrics says, “This Godhis way is perfect; the word of the Lord proves true; he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him.” (2 Samuel 22:31, ESV)

Trouble abounds for the child of God who seeks the welfare of God’s people. If you are trying to bring help and hope to the discouraged and distressed, you can be sure Satan will send some BIG bullies to slow you down. How do you handle them?

Do what David did! He went to the Lord, listened to His Words, made those instructions His strategy and defeated the huge, insurmountable problems of his day.

David knew that God works for those who team up to conquer evil and bring freedom to those enslaved in life. Whether you are working to free addicts of alcohol, drugs, sex, sugar or power … when you seek God’s direction from God’s Word and connect with God’s warriors, victory is imminent. Step forward in the faith of God’s Way: His Word!

Hope For Today is a part of the ministry of Eagles In Leadership. If you would like to know more about the hope God gives and His abundant life through Jesus Christ, I would invite you to check out our website: Eagles In Leadership . org; that’s Eagles In Leadership .org.

7 Marks of Active Worship

Have you been in worship lately? I don’t mean, “Have you been to worship lately?” If we love Jesus, we love Him enough to worship Him both privately and publicly.

What I am asking today is, “Have you been in worship lately?”

Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth; break forth into joyous song and sing praises! Sing praises to the Lord with the lyre, with the lyre and the sound of melody! With trumpets and the sound of the horn make a joyful noise before the King, the Lord!” (Psalm 98:4–6, ESV)

When reading the soundtrack of the Old Testament recently, I ran across these 7 marks of active worship and thought, “Have I been in worship lately?” I think they make a huge difference between the attendance and the relationship issues. The psalmist says that active worship …

  • Makes a joy-filled noise to the Lord!

While I can’t carry a soloist position, I can sing. I remember the words but don’t have a trained voice. “No problem!” the psalmist says, “Let the joy in your heart flow!”

  • Breaks forth in joyous song to the God of the Universe!

Spontaneity is key here. In public worship people often want everyone to remain restrained. But, aren’t “restraints” just another word for “handcuffs?” Who wants to worship God in handcuffs? Break forth in joy – let it out!

  • Sings praises to the One who loves us with all His being!

Sing! Did you hear me? SING! While more and more people aren’t singing today, God says, SING! Don’t know the words? SING! Too high, too low? SING! Whatever you do, SING! He’s worthy of your song – even if others around you don’t seem to get it. Don’t let their cold hearts freeze you out!

  • Uses guitar (or choose your instrument) accompaniment to pour out one’s heart!

Lyre – sounds offensive, right? It’s just a fancy harp-like guitar. The point: Use an instrument if you can and SING! God loves a good tune! (BTW – note there aren’t any “styles” inserted here that are apprpriate or inappropriate!)

  • Stays within the melody (as much as is possible) to please the God who created order!

I love to drive, and I do my best to stay inside the lane, inside the lines as I do. Others seem to appreciate it, and so does my insurance man. God appreciates – and so do your fellow worshipers – when you do your best to stay between the lines of the melody of the song. Do your best and God will be blest. (And he’s the ONLY reason for worship anyway!)

  • Brings in the trumpets to give the worship some awakening!

Make sure you make some NOISE! In high school I played the trumpet. The purpose of the trumpet is to ANNOUNCE the presence of the ones that are there – they “wake it up” when they are present. Have you heard a trumpet fanfare lately? If our worhsip is asleep, we aren’t in the ballpark of praise. God loves a rowdy, melodious worship! Blow that horn!

  • Sounds the shofar (ram’s horn) causing God to remember His people afresh!

And, finally, any self-respecting Old Testament worshipper would know that the shofar was used for many causes, including calling on God to remember His people. So, when we worship, we are there to remind God of the incredible promises He has given to us; not that He needs the reminder, but we show God we remember and are asking Him to fulfill His promises as we worship. (That’s called faith.) So, blast that shofar in faith!

When I think about these marks, I wonder about my worship – both privately and publicly. Am I worshiping God in spirit and in truth? Or, is my soul slowly freezing to death because I want to be restrained and respected by those around me more than the One who made me and lives within me?

What say you?
