Hope For Today – Celebrate His Peace!

Peace – we are all looking for it! The reality is, as we have learned from this past election cycle, peace is FAR from the hearts of Americans these days. And while the pointy finger of blame is flying, the Bible tells us why there is no peace: “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!” (Luke 2:14, ESV)

I’m Dr. Matthew Lee Smith and I want to share some Hope For Today to remind us that God gives peace to anyone and everyone with whom He is pleased!

But peace is a “heart thing,” not a head thing. So many of us are looking for solutions to bring peace to our lives … on Amazon.com I can buy:

  • Books on peace
  • Peace pendants
  • Peace sign vinyl decals for my car
  • Peace flag to display
  • Mugs with peace quotes on them
  • Peace jewelry
  • Peace and Harmony calming scent
  • Sterling silver stud peace earrings
  • Peace locking pencil box

And that was just the first two pages of 20 pages of products. However, I was UNABLE to buy what we all really want: Peace itself!

Hear me now: Only God Gives True Peace. If we learn nothing else this Christmas, let us understand that

Peace is found only through God’s Son, who came to Earth to gift us with the one thing we do desperately need and want!

So, how does God give us this peace?

  • God points us to HIS SON (2.11)

11For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.

Whatever else you hear today, please hear this: God sent His Son for you!

God knows you have a need, and He knew the only solution to your need was His Son!

Peace isn’t a formula; It’s a person!

11For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.

God is asking you to invite Him in to take charge of your life and BE YOUR GOD!

You can ask Him to do that today, right now.

God will hear your heart as you ask Him to take charge of your life and BE YOUR GOD.

Book Review: Autopsy of a Deceased Church: 12 Ways to Keep Yours Alive

by Dr. Matthew Lee Smith, PhD

An estimated 7,000 churches in the United States close their doors every year, never to open again. And, as staggering as that fact is, tens of thousands of churches across America are close to the same demise.

Thom S. Rainer has written the book I had thought of writing many times while working in broken and dying churches over the past four decades.

Consider Autopsy of a Deceased Church a diagnostic tool to discover how close to the ER or morgue the church you are serving in really is! Rainer grasps that the dying or dead church has lost its missional heart. It focuses on the “good old days” and considers the past “glory days” something to be enshrined.

Fossilizing the past, the dead church refused to change with the times and the community. As a result, the people who held the power decided that they were the focus of the finances and programming. Autopsy of a Deceased Church reveals what happens when the preferences of the decision makers within the church neglect the needs of the broken outside the campus.

One sure evidence of a church on its way to the morgue is its inability to keep a pastor for a long time and the size of the gaps between pastors. Autopsy of a Deceased Church explains how the preferences of the people and the “Great Omission” become the toxic poison that brings about an unwillingness to follow the new leader and accept that change much happen for life to blossom again.

When the church’s focus becomes itself instead of reaching the people for whom Christ died, prayer times are more biological – Jack’s back and Jane’s pain – instead of missiological – reach one more for Jesus. Autopsy of a Deceased Church demonstrates how this lack of clear purpose on the Great Commission spells the end of its existence.

As the church becomes more of a small group, it grows increasingly obsessed with its facilities – many times the very anchor that has been dragging itself into the murky abyss for years. Since the facility eats up most of the budget dollars, Autopsy of a Deceased Church shows how the mission is under- or non-funded to the extinction of that Gospel center.

In the remainder of Autopsy of a Deceased Church, Rainer posits twelve responses if one finds themselves inside a dying church. Broken into three segments of increasing urgency, the reader is given hope when there are symptoms of sickness, when the church is very sick and when the church is dying.

EVERY leader and member of EVERY church in America should read this book and the concerned should lead a group in their church with this book. The truths here – even if you are in a healthy church – will be so eloquently and boldly stated that they will make an indelible mark on the heart and soul of even the more jaded reader.

Autopsy of a Deceased Church is a must read and you can order your copy by following this link.

Mark Out a Straight Path!

Avoid all perverse talk; stay away from corrupt speech. Look straight ahead, and fix your eyes on what lies before you. Mark out a straight path for your feet; stay on the safe path. Don’t get sidetracked; keep your feet from following evil.” (Proverbs 4:24–27, NLT)

As God seeks to transform me into the image of His Son, Yeshua, I am amazed at the specificity He brings to my life’s actions. Remember, the lives of the people in our communities are our responsibility.

Recently, at a conference on small groups, the speaker talked about the importance of reaching out to our neighborhoods with God’s love. He didn’t give us the traditional “win them to Jesus” speech. He simply took a marker and a transparency, drew his cul-de-sac, and began to tell us the people who lived in each home, where they worked, what they liked, their children’s names, their schools, and their sports or academic interests. House after house, family after family this presenter simply told us of the people he loved in his neighborhood and their spiritual condition. Did he make an impact that day – yes! Did he have a missional heart? Yes! How did he do this? This passage shows us four critical keys to help us reach them in our generation:

  • Who I am listening to and how I plan out my day are vital to my missional health. Scheduling my days around my mission will change how I look at life. Preparations and plans flow from the mission of Jesus, the work of the Spirit and the lives of my neighbors as I interact with them in each encounter.
  • Preplanning (intentionality) is imperative to my effectiveness. Knowing my neighbors and praying for them constantly allows me to step into their world, feel their struggles and trials, and address those when they come up in conversation.
  • Distractions are to be avoided at all costs! My focus on the mission of sharing Jesus’ love and leadership is primary to everything I do and say.
  • I must forbid any hint of sin! A hypocrite has forfeited their platform for sharing God’s love and leadership.

As I follow God’s Word, He provides life and health, direction and mission! As Solomon promises, “for they bring life to those who find them, and healing to their whole body.” (Proverbs 4:22, NLT) In other words, we have a choice every day!

Hope For Today – The Wisdom God Puts In Our Minds!

It’s happened to you recently … you were at a temporary loss for words, not knowing how to respond. And then, seemingly our of nowhere, the ideas came, the words flowed, and the person you were speaking with was helped, encouraged and lifted.

I’m Dr. Matthew Lee Smith and I want to share some Hope For Today to remind us that God puts wisdom in our minds!

Let’s face it … most of us are average, at best. We struggle with those who seem to “have it all together” and “know just what to say.” In our alone times, we look in the mirror and see someone very plain, very ordinary. And we wonder, sometimes aloud to ourselves, “God, could you ever use someone like me?” To this, we need to remember, “And the whole earth sought the presence of Solomon to hear his wisdom, which God had put into his mind.” (1 Kings 10:24, ESV)

“Oh thanks – now I feel even worse!” you say to me? Well, don’t. Remember, Solomon wasn’t very bright until God put the wisdom into his gray matter! And how did Solomon get that wisdom? He asked for it!

Today, before you step out the door, before you go to that lunch meeting or that dinner event, take a few minutes alone with God. ASK Him for wisdom – His wisdom, supernatural wisdom, the wisdom you do not possess. Ask God to step in and transform your mind, allowing you to remember the things you have read, the truths you have heard from His Word and use those in your decisions and discussions starting right now. God answers prayers like that! He did for Solomon! He will for you as well!

A Resource Tool You NEED Now – A Simplified Harmony of the Gospels!

Sometimes a tool for Bible study comes along that simply is indispensable … and, for the Gospels, I believe THIS is it. Combining all four narratives into one story line, A Simplified Harmony of the Gospels, truly makes understanding the chronological unfolding of the life of Christ.

Combining and adapting the often multiple lines of the Gospel writers, George W. Knight, has chosen to “mesh” the accounts while noting the locations of such adaptations. The “flow” of reading is only slightly impaired with the adjustments.

There are 223 segments to the Harmony, broken into 8 major sections of the life of Jesus allows for more in-depth study. Throughout the chronicles of Jesus life and ministry, George W. Knight has added a running commentary to aid in the understanding of the text in focus.

Bringing clarity to the message of the Gospel combined with ease of reading makes this a MUST-have resource. To order a copy of A Simplified Harmony of the Gospels from Amazon, simply click this link

What a Mighty God We Serve!

Often our lives grow heavy with the burdens of life. When debilitating sickness comes unexpectedly, many grow despondent and wonder what to do. Some grow suicidal and feel like life is over. However, when life grows difficult, we know this is a test, sent from God, so that we will be able to demonstrate the power of our faith and choose the path of victory and life (James 1.2-4).

Since we are told to ask God for wisdom when these seasons overcome us (James 1.5), Melodee and I have done just that. And, as James promised, God is answering! What follows are some thoughts from my prayer time recently:

“He said, “If you will

1) carefully obey the LORD your God,
2) do what is right in His eyes,
3) pay attention to His commands, and
4) keep all His statutes,

I will not inflict any illnesses on you that I inflicted on the Egyptians.

For I am Yahweh who heals you … (כִּ֛י אֲנִ֥י יְהוָ֖ה רֹפְאֶֽךָ׃ ס”)
(Exodus 15:26, HCSB/LHI)

“.yehōwāh,” can be translated, “I am the One who is life .יְהוָֹה”

“רָפָא rāp̱aʿ” can be translated, “healer, rebuilder, repairer.”

Hence, “For I am the One who is Life; I am the One who heals you!”

Have you thought about the amazing implications of Jesus’ ability to hold together, put together, create?

Couple this verse with the thoughts in these:

“For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him ALL THINGS HOLD TOGETHER.” (Colossians 1:16–17, ESV)

The One who heals us is the One who holds all things together. And when we break down, consider calling on the God who …

“… gives life to the dead and calls things into existence that do not exist.” (Romans 4:17, HCSB)

So, in summary, our God …

1) Is Life!
2) Heals us!
3) Creates us (and in us)!
4) Holds us together!
5) Gives our dead parts life!
6) Calls into existence the nonexistent for and in us!

What a MIGHTY God we serve!
Praise Him where you are when you read this … He is worthy of our praise!

Hope For Today – If You Will Walk In My Ways!

Wisdom, long life, riches … what’s your life goal? For Solomon of old, he just needed to get through each day without messing everything up in his job! How about you?

I’m Dr. Matthew Lee Smith and I want to share some Hope For Today to remind us that We need to walk in God’s Ways!

Waking up the morning after his dad died, Solomon must have felt the entire weight of the Kingdom of Israel on the shoulders of this new king. He prays, after a generous offering to the Lord, asking for wisdom to do his job well, to not mess it all up! And God responds,

I give you a wise and discerning mind, so that none like you has been before you and none like you shall arise after you. I give you also what you have not asked, both riches and honor, so that no other king shall compare with you, all your days. And if you will walk in my ways, keeping my statutes and my commandments, as your father David walked, then I will lengthen your days.” (1 Kings 3:12–14, ESV)

Talk about winning the Trifecta! In God’s answer to Solomon, we discover Hope For Today for our lives!

God longs to give us what we need to do our jobs well. Our job is our mission field. When we focus on the needs of those around us – physical and spiritual – and ask God to supply us with the wisdom to do our work well, God’s heart is happy and, just maybe, he will give us more than we asked for. God provides for those who choose to serve the least and the lost in their workplace, neighborhood or classroom.

Faith Expands God’s Territory!

Every living thing grows. Thus, it’s interesting that so many people today are trying to grow dead things. When we watch Jesus in the Gospels, we see Him repeatedly moving on to the next place … (now watch the subplot) … all the while He is watching to see who would follow Him!

The lesson Jesus teaches is simple: We should seek to help living things grow more effectively!

And how do we know if something is alive? It follows Jesus in practice and protocol.

This is the evidence of life, which is the heartbeat of faith. And when faith gets inside a people, a local congregation or group of churches, it is visible in three predictable activities …

1) It strengthens existing disciples who make up current, existing congregations

Wherever we read in the New Testament letters, we discover a simple reality: People need to grow deeper in faith, more daring in the expression of their faith in order to see more dynamics from their faith. How can we do that today? As disciples of Jesus we can …

– Assess: Where are we when it comes to actually being a follower of Jesus? Can people realize I am different from everyone else because of my adherence to and imitation of Jesus?
– Refocus: In those areas where my assessment came up short, how will I delete the distractions and emphasize the essentials that mark the life and mission of Jesus in me?
– Disciple: How am I learning the lifestyle of Jesus from another more seasoned follower? And, who am I pouring what I have learned into? We are not reservoirs, we are channels!!
– Revive: All around us and, to a greater or lesser reality within us, there are places and things that are lagging because we allowed something less eternal to seep into our daily routine. How can I breathe life into the things that will matter in 5, 10, 50, or 100 years from now?
– Retool: All of this strengthening will no doubt require some change, whether in attitude, thoughts, actions, or relationships. How will I make the changes NOW that will yield fewer regrets in the next season of my life and beyond?
– Return: When all is said and done, the Great Commission, the Great Commandment, and the Great Compassion are what life is all about. Taking the time and effort to stay on the path of King Jesus, guided by these three focal points, will bring life more abundant to anyone, any church, or any group of churches.

2) It strategizes on “how to” expansion plans

When a disciple is discipled, a church exists. When a disciple is discipled AND disciples another, expansion is created. THIS is the plan of Jesus (See Matthew 28:19-20). The life and faith of Master Jesus wants us to think MORE because every person is someone for whom He died and wants to enjoy throughout time and eternity through a personal, abundant relationship. In order to reach more, we will need to think … MULTI … as in …

– Multi-disciples: You being discipled and discipling another, MULTIplied over and over, creates …
– Multi-groups of disciples: These groups of disciples who choose to be discipled (as individuals) and disciple others, MULTIplied over and over, creates …
– Multi-sites of disciples: Gathering these groups of disciples together to worship God and work for God, to reach up and reach out,  – Multi-groups of disciples: These groups of disciples who choose to be discipled (as individuals) and disciple others, MULTIplied over and over, creates …
– Multi-venues with disciples: Let’s face it … we’re not all the same. However, we have the same Lord Jesus Christ. Thus, as we gather groups of disciples together to fulfill the Great Commandment, we’ll do so to accomplish the Great Commission by loving different types of people in our communities with the Great Compassion of Jesus; and that, MULTIplied over and over, creates …
– Multi-cities of disciples: Because one city cannot contain the expansion plans of Jesus (reread Acts 1:8 for example). This is the process of planting and harvesting (See Galatians 6:7-8). New disciples form new Life Groups, which become new church locations which expand into more locations in more cities until the Glocal Church of Jesus is found everywhere!

3) It steps forward by faith

Where there is life, there is growth! And growth has one thing in common no matter the language, the culture, the geography, or the urban setting … the life of Jesus – FAITH – will …

– Act to reach one’s connections locally; inviting them to consider the claims of Jesus and becoming the conduit to share Jesus and His life with those people (Faith inside us longs to reach inside others!)
– Act to disciple those connections who respond positively; baptizing them and training them to follow Jesus in lifestyle and sacrifice so that no one locally or relationally goes without hearing and having the opportunity of receiving the love and leadership of King Jesus!
– Act to expand their faith community with more disciples, more groups, more sites, more venues, and more cities, until the WHOLE world knows who Jesus is and responds to His offer of life, and that more abundant (See John 10:10).

How about you? Do you need to strengthen? Strategize? Step forward?

What say you?

Hope For Today – Easter: The Tomb of Jesus is Empty!

It’s Easter and, if we were honest, had it not been for the resurrection of Jesus, we would most likely have never met like this.

I’m Dr. Matthew Lee Smith and I want to share some Hope For Today announcing The Tomb of Jesus is Empty!

In fact, without the resurrection of Jesus, I would most likely be a retired computer programmer, having never answered the call of Jesus to full-time ministry in that critical year when I was seeking WHICH college to go to back in the early 1970s. You see …

Jesus Christ changes lives:

Some people are transformed with hope.

Others are revulsed by their shame.

No one encounters Jesus and walks away indifferent forever!

Yet, some say His claims …

  • Are too bizarre – He can forgive sin and give us eternal life
  • Are too demanding – He calls us to follow Him as King of our lives and leader of our hearts and dreams
  • Are too supernatural – He is the All-Powerful, All-Knowing, All-Present One who is fully God and fully human

Yet, when the honest, open-minded person looks into the historical evidence within and outside the New Testament, they discover it …

  • It screams a risen Jesus!

Listen as I read the earliest Creed of the Church. Paul reminds the Corinthian Church …

I passed on to you what was most important and what had also been passed on to me.

  1. Christ died for our sins, just as the Scriptures said.
  2. He was buried,
  3. And he was raised from the dead on the third day, just as the Scriptures said.
  4. He was seen by Peter and then by the Twelve.
  5. After that, he was seen by more than 500 of his followers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have died.
  6. Then he was seen by James and later by all the apostles.
  7. Last of all, as though I had been born at the wrong time, I also saw him.” (1 Corinthians 15:3–8, NLT)

ANYONE could have tracked these people Paul talks about down and verified if these claims were true … I mean, it had been less than 20 years! Today, we celebrate again an event that has been …

  • Recorded in history
  • Reinforced by investigation
  • Revered by nations
  • And rebelled against by many

However, if you are honest and open-minded, you will look into the historical evidence within and outside the New Testament and discover:

  • It establishes Jesus’ claims of being God!

You see, as fully devoted followers of Jesus, we believe that it was the death of Jesus that paid the penalty of our numerous errors, failures, and rebellions – both in our past, in our present, and into our futures.

We trust that Jesus’ death was the substitution for our own penalty for all those failures and that by admitting to God our specific failures and asking Him to remove the stain of our insolence and the weight of our guilt, He will do so because of the death of Jesus outside of Jerusalem almost 2,000 years ago.

What others are saying about Gathering Missional Leaders

“If learning to be a missional church is the key issue of our time, then it begs many strategic questions about the formation of missional leaders.  In these pithy reflections, Matthew Smith provides some really significant clues to the key issues we must face, as well as some practical suggestions as some ways forward.”

“Rich, straightforward and practical, Matthew Smith has given us a gift with this book. He writes with clarity from his own experience and shows how we can gather missional leaders to serve the cause of Christ in a powerful way. The contents of this book will lift hearts and communities to experience the love of Jesus.”

“I write a lot about leadership in the church. I’m probably passionate about this subject, because I sense such a great need for godly, missional leaders. We need men and women willing to walk by faith and challenge a generation to be more like Christ. Matthew Smith has the heart and tools to mentor young leaders and he’s doing so in his new book, Gathering Missional Leaders.  This is a needed book and will challenge you to live more boldly for Christ and the Kingdom.”

  • Brandon Cox, author of RewiredPastor, Church Planter, & Community Facilitator for Pastors.com

“In my work with Pastors around the world, there are very few I’ve met that have the ability to organize huge ideas and share them in a way that makes them easy to apply than Dr. Matthew Lee Smith. Matt has been a help and an encouragement to me, and I’m excited to see how Gathering Missional Leaders will be used to reach the world. Every Pastor needs this on his shelf!”

“Matthew Lee Smith writes a lot like he lives—with tons of passion and energy. And it’s contagious! Gathering Missional Leaders is a clarion call for those who long to break out of the church-as-usual-mode and accomplish great things for the kingdom. It’s also an excellent resource for groups to work through, as Smith has included insightful discussion questions throughout. This book will stretch your vision for ministry and inspire you to connect with other missional leaders.”

“Matthew Smith picks up where the “Purpose-Drive Life” left off. Smith has created a reproducible Missional Movement plan for the local church.”

“The passion of Matthew Smith will awaken the sleeping giant of the local church to the reality of its God-ordained mission.”

“Are you ready to get your “stuck” church moving forward as a Missional team? Matthew Smith leads us down a pathway dealing with the key issues involved and clarifying our focus toward building and gathering a Missional team that gets the mission accomplished.”

  • Tom Cocklereece, Author of Simple Discipleship, Senior Pastor of Shady Grove Baptist Church in Marietta, GA and CEO of RENOVA Coaching and Consulting/Simple Discipleship http://www.simplediscipleship.com/

“Dr. Matthew Smith has done it again. His book Growing Missional Leaders was good, but his new book Gathering Missional Leaders is even better. Perhaps because the same questions raised by Smith about missional churches are relevant to disciple-making churches.

“Each chapter begins with a missional premise to set the stage for discussion. All of the premises are right on target to developing and gathering a great leadership team for a missional church. However, one is particularly notable as it reminds us of the reality that Christians are in a spiritual war centered in enemy territory. Premise #12 is: Missional leaders understand they are soldiers for Jesus Christ and, as such, are invading a hostile territory to rescue men, women teens and children held hostage. It is imperative that today’s church awaken to meet tomorrow’s challenge of the Great Commission.

“My readers know I am passionate about motivating Christians and the churches to get busy doing the Great Commission—making disciple-making disciples. Recently I began challenging Simple Discipleship churches particularly to develop Special Ops Discipleship Teams that consist of certified disciple-coaches. Gathering Missional Leaders is an excellent guide for developing and maintaining your Special Ops Discipleship Team so you can launch a discipleship revolution in your church.

“Dr. Smith includes good questions for study and reflection at the end of each chapter. Form your vision team, read and study Gathering Missional Leaders together, and make disciple-making disciples! I heartily commend Dr. Smith’s book to leaders who are looking for a great training resource.”

  • Scott Couchenour, Life Coach at ServingStrong.com, VP Operations at Cogun.com

“This is serious stuff in this book. Dr. Matthew Smith has not only addressed the importance of living missionally, but has provided timeless and relevant guidance for those set on taking the challenge to reach a world for Christ, with Christ. From the start Dr. Smith addresses the leader’s heart in the chapter entitled, “It’s Not About You!” He says, “Missional leaders realize the Master has set the agenda.” From there, Dr. Smith proceeds to give clear and effective insight into all the salient aspects of being and leading missionally.

“Look, we don’t have a lot of time on this earth. Even if the Lord tarries for another 100 years, if you are reading this endorsement you have a limited lifespan within which to be used by God. If you’re serious about maximizing God’s impact through you, this book will be a well-worn item on your desk.

  • Walter White Jr. (Special Assistant, Inner City Impact, Chicago; Adjunct Professor, School of Religion, Liberty University Online)

Gathering Missional Leaders is a must read for anyone with a sense of call to reach their community with the life transforming power of the gospel. Birthed out personal experience, decades of hands-on ministry , and a clear understanding of the Biblical mandate, this significant resource will inspire you, challenge you and instruct you on what it means to purposely and authentically be “on mission” for Jesus Christ in the 21st century.”

  • Paul Banister, Pastor, Cornerstone Church in Sandwich, Illinois. www.cornerstoneofsandwich.com

“Matthew’s book is a mountain of missional motivation.  It is Biblically sound and practically written; a map of hope that helps bridge the call to mission with developing a team to carry out the Great Commission.  If you don’t want to try to soar alone in mission, read this book!”

  • Richard Jarman, Pastor, Touch Point Church, Bell Gardens, CA, http://www.touchpointbellgardens.org/

“Dr. Matthew Lee Smith is a blessing to the body of Christ! He has a deep passion to see lives changed by the gospel of Jesus Christ. He knows that the local church is the best place to bring followers of Jesus together, and train them to become leaders who will reach their communities (and the world) for Jesus.

Gathering Missional Leaders was born from his desire to see local churches become training centers where people can learn to “go and make disciples of all nations.” This book is not a dry, academic text designed to teach you facts about discipleship. Instead, it’s a field manual, a how-to guide. It can be (and should be) used by pastors and other church leaders who want to build a climate in their church where the next generation of mission-minded Christians can come together and thrive.

Gathering Missional Leaders is designed to be used as a personal or small group Bible study. Each chapter gives you a unique insight into creating and sustaining an environment conducive to mentoring people who want to follow God’s call to seek and save the lost.

“Rather than give you a synopsis of the book, let me tell the two things I appreciate most about Gathering Missional Leaders. The first is Dr. Smith’s faithfulness to Scripture. This man loves God and His word. He truly believes that everything we do as Christians should have its foundation in the Bible. Thus, what you get in this book are not his theories or ideas. What Dr. Smith delivers are timeless principles from God’s word.

“The second thing I love about this book is the way Dr. Smith applies those timeless principles to the way we live out our calling as Christians. God doesn’t expect us to merely study His word. We need to be doers of the word, and not hearers only. Dr. Smith lays out concrete steps that any church can take to build a culture where missional leaders can grow and thrive.

“I believe that Gathering Missional Leaders will be a great blessing and help to any church, large or small, that acts on the ideas it contains. That’s why I recommend it to you. Read it! Study it! Apply it! God will use it for your good, and His glory.”
