Judges

Israel Fights in Cycles to Conquer the Canaanites (Judges 3-16)

As Israel drops into the disastrous consequences of their evil ways, God allows them to repeat a cycle time and again in these chapters that can be seen by these specific steps:

  • The evil disobedience of the nation to follow other gods, known as idolatry.
  • The quick oppression by a Canaanite King for years.
  • The reluctant request by the people of Israel for deliverance.
  • The merciful provision of a deliverer by the God of Heaven.
  • The victorious deliverance by the judge sent by God.
  • The counterfeit obedience of the nation until the death of the judge.
  • The evil disobedience of the nation to follow other gods, known as idolatry.

When you read through these chapters and see the failures of the people of God, be sure to resonate with them. These are people for whom God loves. While they have chosen a path of rebellion, they pay with wasted lives. Also note, years are passing and their pain and oppression is all of their own creation.

It is our hope that this background information helps a bit as you read on in the Bible.

Judges: The Cycles of Compromise

Editor’s Note: We continue our series of blogs for those who are reading the Bible with us cover-to-cover this year. Interspersed with our thoughts on our daily reading, we want to provide some tips about reading the Bible in general. Today we want to explore …

Judges: The Cycles of Compromise (about 350 years)

Graphic Source: http://narrabriyouth.wordpress.com/2009/02/20/judges-cycle-of-sin/

After such a glorious five-year beginning, one would think that the future of Israel would just get better and better. But such was not the case! The principles of conquest were clearly stated by God to Joshua, and renewed at Shechem by the leaders before Joshua. At Shechem, Joshua challenged to leaders and the people:

“Now therefore, fear the LORD, serve Him in sincerity and in truth, and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the River and in Egypt. Serve the LORD! “And if it seems evil to you to serve the LORD, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”

So the people answered and said: “Far be it from us that we should forsake the LORD to serve other gods; for the LORD our God is He who brought us and our fathers up out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage, who did those great signs in our sight, and preserved us in all the way that we went and among all the people through whom we passed.  And the LORD drove out from before us all the people, including the Amorites who dwelt in the land. We also will serve the LORD, for He is our God.”

But Joshua said to the people, “You cannot serve the LORD, for He is a holy God. He is a jealous God; He will not forgive your transgressions nor your sins. If you forsake the LORD and serve foreign gods, then He will turn and do you harm and consume you, after He has done you good.” And the people said to Joshua, “No, but we will serve the LORD!” So Joshua said to the people, “You are witnesses against yourselves that you have chosen the LORD for yourselves, to serve Him.” And they said, “We are witnesses!” “Now therefore,” he said, “put away the foreign gods which are among you, and incline your heart to the LORD God of Israel.” And the people said to Joshua, “The LORD our God we will serve, and His voice we will obey!” So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day, and made for them a statute and an ordinance in Shechem. Joshua 24:14-25 (New King James Version)

But how quickly Israel, without Joshua, forgets their covenant [sacred promise] with God and falls into the consequence of straying from God’s commands. When we read this book, we discover the cause-and-effect principle that runs the length of this sad story! Watch the cycles of failure in this book, as we divide it into three easier-to-understand parts. In the first section we see …

Israel Fails to Complete the Invasion Against The Canaanites (Judges 1-2)

Almost immediately the failure begins. Notice as you read the first two chapters, that there are clues for the rest of this book. Failures are found by actions previously performed. God judges the nation quickly for their failures to act on His commands. See as we discover …

  • The failure to work together to conquer the land; resulting in hundreds of years of miserable terror at the hands of oppressors. (Judges 1)
  • The unfaithfulness of the children of Israel; resulting in the anger of God and His testing the sincerity of their faith. (Judges 2)

It is our hope that this background information helps a bit as you read on in the Bible.

Stop Praying!

A Lesson from Joshua 7

You bang on the doors of Heaven and nothing! You wonder, what is wrong with God? Why won’t he answer me? Or maybe you can’t seem to get a break. You can be a pastor, elder, deacon or ministry leader who loves God with all you have. Still, God won’t move, the ministry is failing and you can’t put it all together.

The Lord tells us from his experience with the nation of Israel, that sometimes he doesn’t want us to pray, he wants us to discover! Let’s look at what he means by this by remembering a little background.

  • Joshua had led the nation to supernatural victory over Jericho. (Joshua 6) You will remember the “walk in silence, shout in victory” strategy God gave the leader. The walls fell down on the biggest obstacle to their mission!
  • God had expressly forbidden any benefits to the first victory – it all belonged to him. (Joshua 6.18-19) Joshua clearly tells the warriors to put the valuables (Called here, the “devoted things”) in the treasury and leave the rest alone.
  • Joshua sends a small contingent to conquer a little town called Ai – but his forces are thrashed! (Joshua 7.2-6) Despite every outward indication of a swift and total victory, the people of God were severely beaten and many were killed.
  • Joshua goes to prayer, pleading with God for help! (Joshua 7.6-9) As any great leader of God, Joshua goes to the Lord for help!

What does God say in response to Joshua’s heart-filled pleas? STOP PRAYING! Specifically, he says: “Get up! Why have you fallen on your face? ” (Joshua 7:10, ESV) In God’s response we discover one of the key reasons why we, as God’s people on mission, often fail: Israel has sinned!

How did they do that? Note God’s answer in Joshua 7:11 …

  • One man transgressed God’s covenant!
  • One man took some of the devoted things!
  • One man stole what was God’s!
  • One man lied about stealing those devoted things!
  • One man put those devoted things with his own stuff!

And what was the result of ONE MAN’S FAILURE?

Therefore the people of Israel cannot stand before their enemies. They turn their backs before their enemies, because they have become devoted for destruction. I will be with you no more, unless you destroy the devoted things from among you. ” (Joshua 7:12, ESV, Emphasis Added)

God prescribes a simple way to get back to unity with him. You can read about it in rest in Joshua 7. The question today is this:

  • Is someone among you bringing defeat to your ministry?

And what are you going to do about it – other than pray?

It is our hope that this background information helps a bit as you read on in the Bible.

How God Works For and With Us!

A Lesson from the Life of Joshua (Joshua 1-3)

So many times we wait for God to act … whether that is for a new job, a new ministry, a spouse. We are waiting for God to do something. And often, if you are like most people, God does nothing.

In the Old Testament, General Joshua is commanded to move the entire nation into the Promised Land. It is no easy task – Moses failed here 40 years earlier. But Joshua has learned a few lessons since then and puts those into effect here. In the process, Joshua shows us how and why God work with and for us.

  • First, God gives Joshua a command to obey. (Joshua 1.1-2) When God speaks, even if it is, “Cross the flooded river,” we must obey if we desire his abundant life.
  • Next, Joshua scouted the situation for signs of God’s preparation. (Joshua 2.23-24) Joshua refused to let a group of nay-sayers ruin this opportunity, so he quietly sends two reliable men to discover how God has prepared for this mission.
  • Third, Joshua gives the order to follow through on God’s command. (Joshua 3.6) At the same time, Joshua by faith, orders the preparations of the nation for movement across the flooded Jordan River.
  • Fourth, God energizes Joshua and guides him to the next step. (Joshua 3.7-8) Don’t miss this – because Joshua was obeying, God told him, “Today I will begin to exalt you in the sight of all Israel, that they may know that, as I was with Moses, so I will be with you.” (Joshua 3:7, ESV) That’s enough to get any leader’s blood pumping!
  • Fifth, Joshua casts the vision of God’s will for their future. (Joshua 3.9-13) At this point, as the act of the move is about to engage, Joshua tells the people exactly what is about to happen BEFORE it does so their trust in God will grow (as will their trust in the leader who knew this in advance).
  • Sixth, the people set out united on the mission of God. (Joshua 3.14) Perhaps the Red Sea crossing was on mind of some as they stepped out in faith – but be sure of this, it was a step of faith. These men and women were rational adults, and they needed to trust their leader to step out in faith. Joshua’s confidence came from his walk with God and God’s direct command – and he radiated that faith they trusted in.
  • Seventh, God showed up and overcame the apparent obstacle! (Joshua 3.15-17) And there was God – removing was seemed like a huge obstacle. For the Israelites it was. For God, it was nothing.

And that’s how God works – he waits for someone to obey his command, make preparations to follow through and then act! He shows up all along the way – preparing the way BEFORE we choose to obey, energizing the leader AS they obey, and moving the huge obstacles WHEN they move forward in faith.

Got any rivers you think are uncrossable?

Israel Divides The Remainder Of The Land (Joshua 13-24)

Although the passage of five years of war has occurred by the time we read this section, the land is not yet completely conquered. As a result, Joshua, feeling his age, decides to procrastinate no longer. After a careful reconnaissance of the land God had promised, he divides the land by lot – by a raffle. In this section pay special attention to:

  • The division of the land by raffle. (Joshua 13 – 19:48)
  • The gift of land to Joshua by the people. (Joshua 19.49-51)
  • The judicial cities in the land established. (Joshua 20)
  • The spiritual cities in the land deeded to the priests. (Joshua 21)
  • The fulfillment of the promise to fight for the land by the eastern tribes. (Joshua 22)
  • The farewell address by Joshua. (Joshua 23)
  • The renewing of the covenant at Shechem towards the end of Joshua’s life. (Joshua 24)

Israel Defeats Many of the People in Promised Land

Editor’s Note: We continue our series of blogs for those who are reading the Bible with us cover-to-cover this year. Interspersed with our thoughts on our daily reading, we want to provide some tips about reading the Bible in general. Today we want to explore …

Joshua: The Invasion of the Land for Israel (about 25 years)

In Joshua we see the nation of Israel finally achieving the long-awaited victory over the inhabitants of the land promised to Abraham by God. In this book, we see the systematic war of conquest led by the new military leader, Joshua. It is his name that this book bears. As we read, it is easy to see the mistakes of the past have been learned, and avoided as much as possible. It is easier to understand the book if we divide it into four parts. Today we will look at the third part …

Israel Defeats Many Of The People In The Land (Joshua 7-12)

Once the victory of Jericho is accomplished, plans are made to systematically take over the land. As the nation of Israel fight to conquer the inhabitants of the land, the principles of God lead them; either to victory when heeded, or defeat when ignored. As we read through this section, watch as …

  • The disobedience of one man causes defeat to the entire nation! (Joshua 7)
  • The destruction of a city results from the removal of the disobedient member! (Joshua 8 )
  • The deception of an enemy occurs when leaders fail to consult the Lord and obtain His wisdom! (Joshua 9)
  • The devastation of an enemy alliance happens as a result of the supernatural intervention by the God of the Universe! (Joshua 10)
  • The dominion of the nation of Israel transpires over a major part of the Promised Land after a long period of time at war! (Joshua 11-12)

It is our hope that this background information helps a bit as you read on in the Bible. We will continue this series with our next installment on Thursday when we talk about “Israel Divides the Remainder of the Land.”

Israel Takes The Fortified Stronghold Of Jericho (Joshua 6)

Jericho is the lynchpin to the success of the military campaign in the Promised Land. As such, it is the first and most difficult obstacle that confronts Joshua and the nation of Israel. In this chapter, God desires to demonstrate his power over the enemies of Israel, and infuse the people of God with a critical principle:

Whatever God gives first, belongs to God!

Notice …

  • The strange attack plan of God, marching in silence and then, on the last day, shouting in praise! (Joshua 6:1-17)
  • The separation of the spoils for God, not allowing Israel to take anything of value from the victory! (Joshua 6:18-19)
  • The success of this peculiar plan of God, enjoying the victory God had supernaturally given to them! (Joshua 6:20-27)

Joshua: Israel Crosses Into the Promised Land

Editor’s Note: We continue our series of blogs for those who are reading the Bible with us cover-to-cover this year. Interspersed with our thoughts on our daily reading, we want to provide some tips about reading the Bible in general. Today we want to explore …

Israel Crosses Into The Promised Land (Joshua 1-5)

One of the keys to understanding any place you visit is to have a general, broad grasp on its history. When Melodee and I went to Hawaii, although we are went for romance and leisure, a general understanding of this tropical paradise was helpful.

And so it is with our journey through the Bible. On our second route through the Old Testament, we see how Israel rose to power and how it was erased from power. We also see the tender compassion of the God of the Universe in the return of a remnant of the nation of Israel to their homeland.

Major Old Testament Route No. 2:

Taking A Walk Through The History Of Israel

On this route we will explore approximately 1,000 years of the defining history of Israel. Our second route was written as a diary or journal of the actual travels of the people of God in the Old Testament.

It will include the glory days of David and Solomon and the disastrous days of Civil War and captivity.  It will end with a broken and weak remnant that is allowed to return to their conquered home in Israel. When we complete this route, we will have read the entire history of the Old Testament.

Today we will look at the first part …

Israel Crosses Into The Promised Land (Joshua 1-5)

In these first chapters, we see immediate action being taken by Joshua. He refuses to let time pass. He has learned his lessons well and will not procrastinate when God has told him to go. He has also learned the most valuable leadership lesson: When in leadership, LEAD! Notice as you read…

  • How Joshua takes his commission seriously and acts quickly to fulfill God’s will. (Joshua 1.1-18)

In this section we see the commission of God upon Joshua given in verses 1:1-9; and Joshua’s action in verses 1:10-18.

  • How Joshua acts quickly to move the nation across the Jordan, and how his faith is met by the supernatural provision of God. (Joshua 2-4)

Joshua moves quickly by spying out his first obstacle, the fortified city of Jericho. (Chapter 2) He acts quickly to move the children of Israel across the Jordan in chapter 3, and God opens the flooded Jordan River, just as He did at the Red Sea 40 years earlier. Finally, we see God’s wisdom in placing the Memorial Stones Monument next to the Jordan River as a lasting reminder of the Supernatural crossing and the faithful fulfillment of God’s Word. (Chapter 4)

  • How Joshua prepares the nation spiritually by identifying the new generation of men with the covenant of Abraham through circumcision. (Joshua 2-4)

Circumcision: The surgical removal of the foreskin of the male sex organ. This action served as a sign of God’s Covenant relation with His people.

In the Bible’s first mention of circumcision, God instructed Abraham to circumcise every male child in his household, including servants, “in the flesh of your foreskins” <Gen. 17:11>. The custom was performed on the eighth day after birth <Gen. 17:12>. At this time a name was given to the son <Luke 1:59; 2:21>. In the early history of the Jewish people circumcision was performed by the father. But the surgical task was eventually taken over by a specialist.

Circumcision of the Jewish male was required as a visible, physical sign of the covenant between the Lord and His people. Any male not circumcised was to be “cut off from his people” <Gen. 17:14> and regarded as a covenant-breaker <Ex. 22:48>.

Although circumcision was required by the Mosaic law, the rite was neglected during the days when the people of Israel wandered in the wilderness. Perhaps this was a sign that the nation had broken their covenant with God through their disobedience. The rite was resumed when they entered the land of Canaan, with Joshua performing the ritual on the generation born in the wilderness. (Nelson’s Illustrated Bible Dictionary, Copyright (C) 1986, Thomas Nelson Publishers)

The nation is now across the great obstacle of the flooded Jordan River. Joshua acts so as to remove the final obstacle to victory – the spiritual problem. In this action of circumcision, Joshua rolls away the “reproach” of Israel. By this we understand that God sees that the nation is now willing to fulfill His words by obedience. To Him, this is the final condition for His help to His people.

Ps 119:127-132      (New International Version)

Because I love your commands more than gold, more than pure gold, and because I consider all your precepts right, I hate every wrong path.

Your statutes are wonderful; therefore I obey them. The unfolding of your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple.

I open my mouth and pant, longing for your commands. Turn to me and have mercy on me, as you always do to those who love your name.

It is our hope that this background information helps a bit as you read on in the Bible. We will continue this series with our next installment on Monday when we talk about “Israel Takes the Fortified Stronghold of Jericho.”
