Willing Worker Wednesday – Sharing Shows Caring

“What then should we do?” the crowds were asking him. He replied to them, “The one who has two shirts must share with someone who has none, and the one who has food must do the same.”” (Luke 3:10–11, HCSB)

Share with someone who has none. Generosity is the footprint of God’s presence. In our lives, we are never more like Him than when we are giving. Remember, we are to imitate Him wherever possible, See 1 Corinthians 11:1 and John 3:16 as examples.

Giving is such an integral part of our faith that is it the sign of servant leadership itself. We cannot serve if we will not give. Consider the average amount of giving we have to do just to serve another person. First, we have to choose to serve, which means we first give up ourselves for someone else. That’s an attitude shift.

Next, we give of our resources. When I travel to be with someone, I have to use gas for my car, money for Uber, or sweat as I pedal my bicycle. In every case, I have to sacrifice precious resources for someone else. That’s a resource shift.

As we sit over coffee and talk, or we work together to fix the car, or we drive someone to their appointment we use up valuable time. Time is our most valuable commodity. We have little of it to spare in these hectic days. Once an hour is gone, it can never be retrieved. So, investing in someone else instead of us is a value shift.

When Jesus called us to share He told us to do so out of our surplus. You see, sharing is about having something that is good enough that I value it. Whatever I value in resources – time, clothing, food, money, etc. – Jesus calls us to share it.

Why? Because nothing is more personal than giving from our own resources to help another who lacks those very needs. People are drawn to such sacrifices for they reflect one’s heart. And servant leadership is nothing if it is not driven from our hearts.

When you look up and look around today, see those with genuine needs. Of course, start with your family. Then, look at your faith family. And don’t forget your neighbors and even your enemies.  Nothing softens hearts more to be receptive to Jesus than sharing!

Willing Worker Wednesdays are dedicated to explaining the core realities of servant leadership – the Biblical principles and methods used by God’s faithful people throughout time. They further reflect the lifestyle of Jesus, the King of kings and Lord of lords as He walked on this earth announcing the Kingdom of God had arrived. These brief lessons are written by Dr. Matthew Lee Smith, Executive Director of Eagles In Leadership, and come from his extensive ministry within the local church, in higher education, in church consulting and as a Biblical author and leader. Turn-Around Tuesday – Happy Wife, Happy Life?

Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, had borne him no children. She had a female Egyptian servant whose name was Hagar. And Sarai said to Abram, “Behold now, the Lord has prevented me from bearing children. Go in to my servant; it may be that I shall obtain children by her.” And Abram listened to the voice of Sarai.” (Genesis 16:1–2, ESV)

And Abram listened to the voice of Sarai. Sometimes the choices we make, in retrospect, make absolutely no sense. Have you been there? I know I have. What were we thinking? Were we thinking?

Every time I reread this story I say the same things. What were they thinking? Were they thinking? How does this make sense on any level? Does the desire to have a child, a son, override the sacredness of the marriage bed? The answer to that question will define one’s quality of life for the remainder of our years.

Here, with an insurmountable problem before Him was a God who had just promised Abraham, “And behold, the word of the Lord came to him: “This man shall not be your heir; your very own son shall be your heir.” And he brought him outside and said, “Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.” And he believed the Lord, and he counted it to him as righteousness.” (Genesis 15:4–6, ESV)

How do you resolve situations where obstacles seem to have stopped and derailed your forward progress? Do we pray, fast, cry out to God and enlist the prayers of others for God’s supernatural intervention? Or do we imitate the ways of the world and seek natural, unbiblical ways to bring about the result we desire?

How we step forward when our paths are blocked reveals the destination we will eventually arrive at. Shortcuts and sin-cuts will only lead us to a less-than-desired future filled with regret and pain.

As Abraham and Sarah will tell you now, on this side of their horrible solution, lots of bad came from this arrangement. Animosity, that corrosive emotion that undermines everything between two people ate away the joy of union and replaced it with the loathing of seeing each other. Today, though the way is hard, choose the Path of Life. God will honor it in time if we trust Him.

Turn-Around Tuesdays are designed to bring hope and help, insight and encouragement to those of us who are simply overwhelmed by the flood of problems life throws at us. No one is immune to trials and troubles, but God has a way of lifting us from life’s torrents. Each short thought is written by Dr. Matthew Lee Smith, Executive Director of Eagles In Leadership, and comes from his life-journey with the God who never leaves us or forsakes us. Magnificent Marriage Monday – Leveraging Our Platform!

Then he said, “Since I have ventured to speak to my lord, suppose twenty are found there?” He replied, “I will not destroy it on account of twenty.” Then he said, “Let my lord not be angry, and I will speak one more time. Suppose ten are found there?” He answered, “I will not destroy it on account of ten.”” (Genesis 18:31–32, CSB)

I will not destroy it on account of ten. Marriage is a wonderful platform from which to share the goodness and generosity of God’s character. When a husband and wife walk close to the Lord and one another, the incredible things that happen are showcased to the world we live in. Like a constantly running video, God allows his grace and mercy to flow effervescently in and over our friendships.

Many fail to grasp the enormity of a couple walking in peace with one another. We often don’t realize that what the Lord gives us is so unlike what the world experiences. The tranquility of inner peace and the power of partnership combine to display an enviable atmosphere others see and hunger for.

Such is the platform the surrendered and servant-hearted man and wife are able to speak life from. Yet, so many fail to enunciate the reasons for their joy and happiness, to the loss of those who would be eager to hear it.

It is at this point that Lot and his wife failed grievously. While they had lived in Sodom for some time, they had yet to influence others, much less bring them to saving faith. For the 21stCentury follower of Jesus, nothing could be more essential when it comes to the couple united in holiness.

The Prime Directive remains the mission statement of each individual and each couple who claim the name of Jesus. Amidst the cash and the chaos, God prods His people – especially couples – to use their platforms of peace to open the hearts and minds of their friends with the saving knowledge of Jesus their King.

Though Lot and his wife lost their community through their lack of influence, you have an incredible opportunity to work together, create a platform of mercy, and leverage that grace into something that will change lives as you speak of the goodness of God. All you need to do is speak the life you so constantly enjoy to those you live around!

Faith Filled Friday – Recognizing God’s Hand In The Matter

Then Laban and Bethuel answered and said, “The thing has come from the Lord; we cannot speak to you bad or good. Behold, Rebekah is before you; take her and go, and let her be the wife of your master’s son, as the Lord has spoken.”” (Genesis 24:50–51, ESV)

The thing has come from the Lord; we cannot speak to you bad or good. When do you know something is God’s will and whim? How do you stand in the assurance that the circumstances that have unfolded before you are, in fact, God’s desire for your life? What do we need to have before we will agree that the thing is of the Lord?

For Laban and Bethuel, there was no doubt that, once the story had been unpacked for him, God had led through it all. While it meant that Rebekah would never be seen again by her family and that she would make her home 1,000 miles to the West, the reality of God’s will was so strong all of that was set aside to fulfill the plan of God.

What so moved Rebekah and her family to agree to such a bizarre arrangement that sent her far from home to marry a man she had never met with a stranger she had only encountered a few hours before? Once we understand the answer to that question, we will have the answers to ours.

Rebekah and her family understood this endeavor was bathed in prayer and fashioned in the heart of a man of God, Abraham. He was family and it was obvious to all that God had blessed him since his servant was here lavishing gifts upon them.

Second, the process by which the servant chose to select the right woman, the first woman to sacrifice the time and effort to water their camels, was unique in its nature. Abraham’s servant hadn’t chosen the common ways to find a wife by beauty or riches. He was looking for a woman of character and the display of her nature would be seen in her voluntary and generous actions.

Ultimately, the timing and specificity of the answer to this servant’s plan and prayer wooed everyone to see God’s hand. God moved in response to a very specific request.

Today, as you seek God’s leading by faith, get specific, and wait for God to respond to your request. Truly there will be no doubt then!

Faith Filled Fridays hope to boost your trust in God and accelerate your daring and courage in everyday life. Dr. Matthew Lee Smith, Executive Director of Eagles In Leadership, writes each encouragement out of a heart that has known both great joy and great loss – his wife of 38 years, 5 months and 2 days was promoted to Heaven on November 11, 2017. Through every experience, God has proven Himself more than faithful and trustworthy. He welcomes your comments below.

Train Them Thursday – Is There Life?

The Child continued to grow and become strong, increasing in wisdom; and the grace of God was upon Him.” (Luke 2:40, NASB95)

The Child continued to grow and become strong. Where faith lives, growth happens! The opposite is also true. In fact, we can diagnose our own spiritual health as a disciple of Jesus by this simple measurement: “Am I growing? How have I grown in the last month?”  Questions like these stir the soul to self-evaluate and determine our faith-health. Without growth, we shrink back and die spiritually.

Now, before we move on, be careful of the alternative, which is criticizing others. Satan loves to cause us to think we are spiritual when we look into another person’s life and find fault with them. That isn’t spiritual health. That is pride. And we, as disciples of King Jesus, are to be marked by our humility. Our own constant self-examination is evidence of that meekness.

All living things grow. All dying things die. It is THAT simple for a diagnostic. Think of the plants around your home. Life is green. Death is brown. When we go to the grocery store we can tell the condition of the fruit by their appearance. Mold, bruises, shriveling, and softness all are evidence of death.

For the true follower of Jesus, spiritual health sees us growing stronger each week, each month. We are no longer what we were but we are not yet what we will be. God intended for us to be vibrant spiritually. In fact, as we grow into our later years of life on this planet we should be able to confidently say, “Therefore we do not lose heart, but though our outer man is decaying, yet our inner man is being renewed day by day.” (2 Corinthians 4:16, NASB95)

With each month our ability to make wise choices should increase. In the words of God each day we discover the examples of the Old Testament people. There we discover fools and the faith-filled. Listening, aligning, and applying are the traits of a wise disciple.

God’s grace flows on those who grow! That grace is constantly “instructing us to deny ungodliness and worldly desires and to live sensibly, righteously and godly in the present age,” (Titus 2:12, NASB95) Each day and in every way, God meets us when we draw near to Him and His grace-filled growth is evident to those we meet.

Train Them Thursdays seeks to wed the Great Commission directive of Jesus with the practice He employed while on Earth. Each nugget is meant to encourage the reader with a “can-do” spirit to realize that discipleship is something each person is both capable of and empowered to accomplish. Dr. Matthew Lee Smith, Executive Director of Eagles In Leadership, writes each thought and they flow out of decades of his tried and true field-testing in multiple settings from rural to inner city. He welcomes your comments below.

Willing Worker Wednesday – Boldly Speaking for God

When he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to the place of his baptism, he said to them, “Brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? Therefore produce fruit consistent with repentance. And don’t presume to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that God is able to raise up children for Abraham from these stones! Even now the ax is ready to strike the root of the trees! Therefore, every tree that doesn’t produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.” (Matthew 3:7–10, HCSB)

Brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? Therefore produce fruit consistent with repentance. Serving God often means speaking truth to people that don’t want to hear it. That truth can cause us to back down or back away from the declaration. We are afraid of what people will think of us or what they might do to us.

Yet, it is God who sends us to that place to proclaim that message to that crowd. He knows what the results are going to be. He knows who will respond and who will reject the proclamation of life and hope. And truly, that’s above our pay grade. We are simply called to “go and tell” and leave the results up to the Lord.

Boldly speaking for God is a characteristic of a true servant leader of King Jesus. Those who know their Master well know that He is King of kings and Lord of lords. No one is more powerful or has the ability to command life and light like He does. We rest assured that we do not follow “a god.” We follow THE God!

And, so, we are able to stand as John did and confront those religious folk who think they are too good to humble themselves and submit to the method of God. While those we speak to may have power, we have nothing to fear. As Jesus reassured us, “Don’t fear those who kill the body but are not able to kill the soul; rather, fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” (Matthew 10:28, HCSB) This is the real test of our servant leadership … the one we fear is the one we truly serve.

And so, today, we have a choice before us. Will we go and tell our family, friends, loved ones the message of our King? And, yes, even those religious ones who think they are too good for repentance?

Willing Worker Wednesdays are dedicated to explaining the core realities of servant leadership – the Biblical principles and methods used by God’s faithful people throughout time. They further reflect the lifestyle of Jesus, the King of kings and Lord of lords as He walked on this earth announcing the Kingdom of God had arrived. Turn-Around Tuesday – God’s Timetable and Our Lifetime

Then the Lord said to Abram, “Know for certain that your offspring will be sojourners in a land that is not theirs and will be servants there, and they will be afflicted for four hundred years. But I will bring judgment on the nation that they serve, and afterward they shall come out with great possessions.” (Genesis 15:13–14, ESV)

Know for certain that your offspring will be sojourners in a land that is not theirs and will be servants there, and they will be afflicted for four hundred years. Life doesn’t go well all the time. In fact, though this is hard to swallow in our candy-coated theological world, sometimes it is in God’s plan to allow His children to suffer because of His timing and purposes.

Yes, I know. No one wants to be those people, much less hear that truth. However, we can see it in our world every day. Just watching the latest videos from countries where Christianity is seen as the enemy and a threat will reveal that. Some of you are in awful situations and are reading this in the hope that God wants everyone to have a much less painful life today.

And while that may sell books and fill buildings, the truth is that has never been the reality for all the people of God at any given moment. Consider these sobering words as a testimony …

Others suffered mocking and flogging, and even chains and imprisonment. They were stoned, they were sawn in two, they were killed with the sword. They went about in skins of sheep and goats, destitute, afflicted, mistreated— of whom the world was not worthy—wandering about in deserts and mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.” (Hebrews 11:36–38, ESV)

Sometimes God’s timetable and our lifetime are simply in sync in such a way that we will have to deal with much more bad than good. And what are we supposed to do in such circumstances? As Jesus said, “In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16, ESV)

No matter our current situation though, we can stand firm knowing that God is working out His plan. And, we can be sure that He will reward us abundantly in Heaven for being faithful to that plan.

Magnificent Marriage Monday – Changing Our Conditions!

But the Lord asked Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh, saying, ‘Can I really have a baby when I’m old?’ Is anything impossible for the Lord? At the appointed time I will come back to you, and in about a year she will have a son.” Sarah denied it. “I did not laugh,” she said, because she was afraid. But he replied, “No, you did laugh.”” (Genesis 18:13–15, CSB)

Is anything impossible for the Lord? Our problems in marriage can seem to be greater than we can ever overcome. What will we do when we need is a giant-killer but we are even afraid of mice! Should we “cut and run” or be brave (whatever that is) and stand our ground hoping for something better to soon happen.

As the wife, the helper, you can do a lot to influence and change the course of your future together. As a partner corresponding to him,” (Genesis 2:20, CSB) you have the ability to lift and turn the heart of your man toward the Almighty in those tough times. It is your encouragements that fuel His faith. As Solomon reminds us: “Two are better than one because they have a good reward for their efforts. For if either falls, his companion can lift him up; but pity the one who falls without another to lift him up.” (Ecclesiastes 4:9–10, CSB)

However, when doubt comes in, it seems to darken all hopes and dreams. Doubt eats away at the impossible, seeing only what’s possible. Doubt tells us what can be, not what should be. When faith flees, hope exits. We feel confined and consigned to deal with so much less when our belief turns to dust. Truly the “super” leaves and all we’re left with is the “natural” as our days drag into months and years without the touch of God.

Sarah struggled with the real, every day, the here and now. She didn’t have the eyes of faith to see that while she had stepped into the routine, God lives in the miraculous! While Sarah’s post-menopausal condition changed her faith, God is looking for those whose faith changes their conditions.

Are you the wife that changes the conditions of the surroundings in your marriage? Do you come to the table with a faith that knows God can and will change things? What bigger things is God leading you to trust Him for? How will your faith change your future as a couple, a family, a neighborhood, a church, and a community?

Magnificent Marriage Mondays are helpful hints, clues, ideas, and solutions for the child of God who is looking for a spouse, in a relationship with someone, or are already married.
